Sequencing Batch Reactor

Prentec offers a tried and tested sewage treatment plant utilising the SBR process. These plants are ideal for small communities i.e. 100 – 50 000 people, and support the government’s job creation objectives through the use of local labour for construction. While these plants are constructed in concrete and steel to the highest quality standards, they remain very cost competitive. This is achieved through the use of innovative construction techniques wherein the bulk of work is carried out in our factory.

Prentec has designed and constructed more than 350 SBR plants throughout the country for Municipalities, Mines and Industrial Clients. Our bioreactor treats the raw sewage by the extended aeration principle of the activated sludge process.  The SBR process is in itself very simple with a minimum of working parts and all steps of the process are implemented in a single tank:

  • Aeration (Nitrification and COD assimilation)
  • Anoxic Phases (De-Nitrification)
  • Clarification
  • Decant

The biological treatment process is automated which greatly simplifies the plant operational control and reduces the total operating costs. The SBR is designed to ensure the final effluent conforms to the required standards as set out by the regulating authority.

Total capital costs – are reduced by eliminating settling tanks and sludge recirculation equipment together with a reduction in sludge handling facilities.

Plant reliability – offers great flexibility and reliability in operation.

Operational control – the system completely eliminates the operating problems and housekeeping requirements associated with the day-to-day control of activated sludge plants, e.g. sludge bulking, sludge recirculation, wash down of clarifiers.

Plant performance – is not sensitive to large or daily fluctuations in organic and hydraulic loads supplied to the plant thus producing a consistent high quality effluent.

Waste excess sludge – the total volume of sludge produced is reduced due to longer average sludge age and higher recommended operating levels of the mixed liquor suspended solids.

Labour / maintenance – is greatly reduced due to the plant’s automatic mode of operation and the simplicity of the plant’s construction.

Plant extensions – batch plants are constructed in modular fashion hence extensions are simple to implement and extremely cost effective

Environmentally friendly – the total oxidation process eliminates the formation of obnoxious odours thus enabling batch reactors to become more environmentally acceptable. The longer average sludge age also minimises fly and odour nuisances.
